New Delhi: Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have formally sealed a bilateral defence agreement, marking a significant development in the geopolitics of West Asia and South Asia. The pact, aimed at strengthening military cooperation between Riyadh and Islamabad, comes amid shifting regional security dynamics.

India responded cautiously on Thursday, stating that it was aware the agreement was under consideration and would carefully study its implications. A spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, said the government would assess the impact on India’s national security and regional and global stability.

“We have seen reports of the signing of a strategic mutual defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Government was aware that this development, which formalises a long-standing arrangement between the two countries, had been under consideration,” Jaiswal said.

He added, “We will study the implications of this development for our national security as well as for regional and global stability. The Government remains committed to protecting India’s national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains.”

New Delhi claimed that, Saudi Arabia kept India “in the loop” during the negotiations, reflecting the cautious diplomatic engagement between the three nations.

The pact is widely seen by analysts in New Delhi as a response to the United States’ strategic retrenchment from the region, as well as to recent Israeli military operations, including targeted strikes against Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital, Doha. Israel’s growing assertiveness, with attacks on multiple countries in the region such as Iran, Lebanon, Syria, and Qatar, has heightened concerns about regional security.

The Saudi-Pakistan defence agreement is being interpreted as a move towards formalising collective security arrangements to counterbalance Israeli actions and the evolving regional threat environment.

As the new alliance takes shape, all eyes will be on how this partnership influences the strategic calculations in West Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
