US dismisses Western recognition of Palestinian state as ‘Symbolic’

US
WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has downplayed recent announcements by several Western countries recognizing a Palestinian state, calling them “symbolic moves” rather than meaningful steps toward peace.
According to the US State Department, Washington’s priority remains serious diplomacy, not “symbolic declarations.” It said the US focus is on achieving peace, ensuring Israel’s security, and securing the release of hostages.
The department further emphasized that peace and prosperity in the region are only possible “without Hamas,” adding that recognition of Palestine by the UK, Australia, Canada, and others amounted to no more than a symbolic gesture.
Earlier, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada had formally recognized Palestine as a state.
The Australian government announced its decision, stating that it officially acknowledges Palestine as a sovereign state. Authorities further emphasized that Hamas should have no role in Palestine’s governance.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also confirmed the recognition, declaring, “From today, Canada recognizes Palestine as a state.” He added that Israel has been systematically working to undermine the prospects of a Palestinian state.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain, too, now recognizes Palestine as a state.
The coordinated decisions by these three countries mark a significant shift in international support for Palestinian statehood.
