Amazon Web Services outage causes global disruptions across major websites and apps

A major outage in Amazon Web Services (AWS) has triggered widespread disruptions across the internet, affecting a broad range of popular websites, apps, and digital services worldwide.
The incident, centered on the AWS US-EAST-1 region, involved significant error rates for requests to DynamoDB, a key database service used by many web applications. AWS acknowledged the issue on its official status page, stating it had “identified a potential root cause” and was “working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery.”
Affected Services Span Multiple Industries:
The outage sent shockwaves across various industries, impacting services from social media and messaging to gaming, finance, and AI. Among those affected:
Perplexity AI – The popular AI-driven search startup reported being down, with CEO Aravind Srinivas attributing the issue directly to the AWS outage.
Robinhood – The stock trading platform faced service interruptions, affecting users’ ability to access financial data and place trades.
Signal – The secure messaging app saw reduced performance, with users reporting delays and failed message deliveries.
Coinbase – One of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, Coinbase reported access and transaction issues.
Other platforms affected include Zoom, Roblox, Fortnite, Canva, Duolingo, and Wordle, according to outage tracker Downdetector.
Amazon Properties Hit as Well:
Amazon’s own services, including its main shopping platform, Prime Video, and Alexa voice assistant, were also reported to be experiencing issues, highlighting the central role AWS plays even within Amazon’s ecosystem.
Cloud Dependency Under Scrutiny:
AWS is one of the world’s leading cloud providers, powering a vast portion of the internet by offering scalable computing, storage, and database services. Alongside competitors like Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, AWS supports digital infrastructure for businesses and public institutions globally.
As with previous high-profile outages, today’s disruption underscores the vulnerabilities created by widespread reliance on a few centralized cloud providers. Although AWS engineers are reportedly working urgently to restore full service, the incident has reignited discussions about cloud redundancy, regional distribution, and infrastructure resilience.
