South Africa’s promising young fast bowler, Kwena Maphaka, has been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan and the one-off T20 International against Namibia due to a hamstring injury sustained during a domestic four-day fixture.

The 18-year-old left-arm seamer experienced discomfort while bowling in the first innings of a recent domestic match, managing just 5.5 overs before being forced to leave the field. Although initial medical assessments did not indicate a serious concern, subsequent tests confirmed a Grade 1 to 2 hamstring strain. As a result, Maphaka will undergo a four-week rehabilitation programme under the supervision of Cricket South Africa’s medical team.

In light of Maphaka’s unavailability, Ottniel Baartman has been drafted into the squad for the T20 International against Namibia on October 11, as well as the three-match T20 series against Pakistan. Additionally, Lizaad Williams, who was already named in the T20 squad, has now been added to the ODI squad for the Pakistan series.

South Africa’s tour of Pakistan is set to commence on October 12 with a two-match Test series. The T20 leg begins on October 28, followed by three One Day Internationals concluding on November 8.

The reshuffle in the pace department comes as South Africa continues to build squad depth ahead of a packed international schedule. Maphaka’s injury, while a setback, is being managed cautiously to ensure his long-term availability, given his rising stature in the national setup.
