KARACHI: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and long-serving former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, passed away on Wednesday.

According to family sources, Agha Siraj Durrani had suffered a brain hemorrhage about a month ago and was hospitalized. His condition deteriorated again in recent days, and doctors later confirmed his death.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his deep grief over the passing of former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.

Paying tribute to his political and public services, the president said that the late Agha Siraj Durrani played a significant role in promoting democratic values.

He prayed to Allah Almighty for peace for the departed soul and also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed profound grief and sorrow over the demise of Agha Siraj Durrani, calling him a dedicated, loyal, and principled leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The chief minister said Agha Siraj Durrani played a vital role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and promoting democratic values, adding that his services will always be remembered.

Agha Siraj Durrani served as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly from May 31, 2013, to May 25, 2024, and also held the position of acting Governor of Sindh from March 2022 to October 2022.

Associated with the PPP for over four decades, Durrani was first elected to the Sindh Assembly in 1988, served three times as a provincial minister, and was twice elected as Speaker. He was regarded as one of the trusted aides of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari.
