Maldives becomes first country to enforce generational smoking ban

The Maldives has made global headlines by becoming the first country to implement a generational smoking ban, a groundbreaking public health measure designed to create a tobacco-free future.
The initiative, introduced by President Mohamed Muizzu earlier this month, officially came into effect on November 1. It prohibits individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, from purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products anywhere in the island nation.
According to the Ministry of Health, “The new initiative will protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation.”
The regulation extends to visitors as well, meaning tourists of the affected age group are also banned from buying or using tobacco products during their stay in the Maldives — a nation of over 1,190 coral islands famed for its luxury resorts and pristine beaches.
In addition to the generational tobacco ban, the Maldives maintains a complete prohibition on electronic cigarettes, including their import, sale, possession, and use, regardless of age.
Under the new laws, selling tobacco products to underage individuals will incur a fine of 50,000 Maldivian Rufiyaa (approximately USD 3,200). The use of vape devices will result in a fine of 5,000 Rufiyaa (around USD 320).
Public health experts have described the policy as a bold and progressive step in global tobacco control. While other nations ,such as New Zealand have considered similar measures, the Maldives is currently the only country where a generational smoking ban has been fully implemented.
Officials say the move underscores the Maldives’ commitment to public health and environmental sustainability, aiming to build a tobacco-free generation for years to come.
