LAHORE: The Punjab cabinet has formally approved amendments to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965, clearing the way for new penalties, updated digital systems, and stricter compliance measures.

Following the cabinet’s approval, the summary containing 20 proposed amendments has been forwarded to the Punjab Assembly for final legislation.

According to the summary, the current fine structure—ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000—has been revised, with the new proposed fines set between Rs 2,000 and Rs 20,000.

Under the revised penalties:

Motorcycle overspeeding: Rs 2,000

Cars up to 2000cc: Rs 5,000

Cars above 2000cc: Rs 20,000

Commercial and public service vehicles: Rs 15,000

The summary also proposes stricter penalties for traffic violations, including:

Signal violation: Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000

Lane and zebra crossing violations: Rs 10,000

Using a mobile phone while driving: Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000

Legal action against those allowing underage individuals to drive

Front-seat passengers will be required to wear seat belts, and action is recommended against individuals who alter vehicle designs.

The summary sent to the Punjab Assembly also seeks legal status for digital challans and computerized driving licences. Additionally, under the amended ordinance, pillion riders on motorcycles will also be required to wear helmets.

A point-based penalty system is also being introduced, with 2 to 4 points deducted for various traffic violations. Accumulation of 20 points will result in driving licence suspension for six months to one year.
