KARACHI: The year’s biggest and brightest supermoon will appear in the sky tonight, visible clearly across Pakistan and several other parts of the world.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.

According to a spokesperson for Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission(SUPARCO), this will be the second of three supermoons this year and will appear exceptionally radiant and large.

The phenomenon will reach its peak brightness at 6:19 PM, when the moon will be just 221,817 miles from Earth — appearing about 9.7% larger and 16% brighter than its usual size.

The SUPARCO spokesperson added that the moon will be best visible across Pakistan shortly after moonrise. The event promises to captivate not only astronomy enthusiasts but also ordinary sky-watchers.

This marks the second supermoon of the year, with the next and final one expected in December.

Astronomers note that the clear winter skies in most parts of Pakistan will make the view even more striking, especially in areas with minimal light pollution. The supermoon’s glow will not only be a celestial spectacle but also a rare treat for the public.
