The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)  postponed its verdict on a petition challenging the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) here on Tuesday.

A three-member bench Headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan had reserved the verdict on Aug 1 after hearing arguments for and against the appointment and set Aug 27 for its announcement after hearing arguments from both sides.

As per details ECP has deferred judgment on whether Maryam Nawaz can hold a party position to the 3rd of September.

The ECP announced its judgment on a petition challenging the appointment of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz as vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

If the decision goes against her it is likely to weaken political position of Maryam Nawaz who is already in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) over money laundering charges.

However, Maryam’s lawyer Barrister Zafarullah said that there was no such law which could challenge the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as party’s vice president.

According to the petitioners, the Supreme Court had disqualified Maryam’s father Nawaz Sharif from his party position as well, adding the ECP should similarly declare her appointment as illegal.
