The Islamabad High Court has declared the appointment of famous singer turned politician Abrar-ul-Haq as chairman of Pakistan Red Crescent Society legitimate and rejected the plea of Dr Saeed Elahi.

Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah announced the verdict in the case and dismissed the stay order against the appointment of Abrar-ul-Haq as Chairman Pakistan Red Crescent Society.

During the hearing, Justice Athar Minallah remarked that the matter of appointment falls in the category of administrative issues being looked after by the prime minister.

Dr Illahi had contended that Abrar-ul-Haq had been appointed for a period of three years as per rules and regulations and that his tenure would end on March 9, 2020.

However, additional Attorney General Tariq Khokhar has informed the court that the government has already changed the rules for appointment of the chairman.

Abrar ul Haq’s lawyer contended that the Red Crescent is a welfare body and the petition against appointment of its chairman is non-maintainable.

On November 15, Abrar ul Haq had been appointed as the new chairman of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

President Arif Alvi had approved the appointment for PRCS, also known as Hilal Ahmar. Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination had also issued a notification regarding Abrar’s appointment.
