Sindh Government restores student unions

Sindh Government has decided in principle to restore student unions in educational institutions of the province.

Murtaza Wahab – Adviser to Chief Minister of Sindh on Law, announced the decision while addressing to a press conference, here on Monday in Karachi.

The Advisor said that the provincial law department has initiated consultations for restoration of the student unions.

He said the decision has been taken on the directives of the chief minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali shah, followed by the statement of PPP’s top leader Bilawal Bhutto, for revival of Unions.

Murtaza Wahab also recalled the time Sindh used to have student unions, produced number of finest student leaders of all time.

“Law Ministry also had a meeting with the representatives of students, who have submitted their demands and recommendations to the government,” Wahab said.

The bill for revival of the unions in academic institutions will be tabled in the provincial assembly after its approval from the provincial cabinet, advisor for the law added.

On November 05th, Sindh Assembly had adopted a resolution to lift ban on student unions from Sindh.

The resolution, was moved by Pakistan People’s Party MPA Nida Khuhro and supported by all opposition parties in the assembly.

The resolution also demanded the revival of student unions as well as the maintenance of a healthy environment within the educational institutions of the province.

Earlier on saturday, Students, activists and supporters  have gathered across Pakistan for Student Solidarity March.

The march was led by the Student Action Committee (SAC), they present a charter of demands including the reinstatement of the student unions.

The protesters were demanding the education budget be increased to 10% and the restoration of student unions.

 

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry also came on support on student march and tweeted “I fully support Restoration of students unions, ban on students unions is anti-democratic.”
