The death toll from four-storey residential building collapse in Karachi’s Rizvia Society has reached 17 after rescue workers retrieved dead bodies.

The building had initially been constructed as a four-storey complex, but the builder was constructing fifth floor in violation of construction rules due to which it caved in.

Two houses adjoining the building also collapsed.

According to residents of the area, a number of people still suspected to be trapped under the rubble.

Rangers, police and rescue teams are busy in rescue operation.

Rescue sources informed that seven women and three children were among the dead.

They also informed that 24 other persons received injuries and shifted to hospital.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Sindh (CM) Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and sought report from the concerned authorities.

Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Mahar directed Central Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammad Arif Aslam Rao to head the rescue operation in the area.

On December 30, a six-floor building, having 19 flats collapsed in Karachi’s Ranchore Line area.

Getting notice of the matter, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) c the area and had sealed the building.

Residential edifice located in Somra Street of Ranchor line. It had 19 flats and a couple of warehouses.

It built more than 10 years ago.

Utility connections to the residential complex had already disconnected.

The building evacuated in the wee hours of Monday after cracks had appeared in its structure.

The officials present at the site of the view that substandard material used in the construction, which led to the building’s decrepit state and eventual collapse.

Area people said the building collapsed because of dilapidated condition.

The Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) Pakistan held Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) responsible for building collapse in Karachi’s Ranchore Line.

The spokesperson of ABAD in a statement alleged that SBCA is patronizing illegal construction in Karachi, which results in massive loss.

Earlier On December 19, at least two laborers lost their lives when an under construction building collapsed in Chawala Market.
