Oceanography experts have warned that in the next 45 years, Pakistan’s biggest city may sink into the ocean along with other coastal towns of Sindh province.

For that, the Pakistan Senate’s Standing Committee on Science and Technology has written a letter to the federal government and warned about the sea intrusion problem along with the coastal areas of Sindh and advised the government to take serious steps to save the province.

According to the letter, the Pakistan Senate’s Standing Committee on Science and Technology warned the if sea tenacious continues, then in the next 30 years, coastal towns of Badin and Thatta might sink into the ocean along with Karachi by around 2060.

The National Institue of Oceanography chief Asif Inam had warned the Senate Standing Committee if the sea erosion continues in the Indus delta and coastlines, then the city of 20 million people, Karachi could sink into the ocean by 2060.

To prevent such a catastrophe, the letter called upon the Ministry of Water and Power, Pakistan Navy, National Institute of Oceanography, and other national institutions to conduct research studies in this area.

Inam had earlier attributed this disastrous scenario to changes in weather patterns and rising temperatures as well as unplanned development in Sindh’s coastal areas.
