Apex Court issues notice to NAB over Shah’s bail petition

Pakistan’s top court on Wednesday issued to notice to the anti-graft body National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the response to a petition of Peoples Party leader Syed Khursheed Shah, seeking bail in the assets beyond means reference against him.

According to the details, Defense counsel, Raza Rabbani, informed the court that Shah has been in jail for more than a year now, requesting the forum to grant him bail.

Khursheed Shah was arrested by the anti-graft body in September the previous year in a case regarding his alleged assets beyond income.

Raza Rabbani also urged to the top court to fix the hearing of the petition in the ongoing week.

To this, Justice Umar Ata Bandial said the petition cannot be fixed for this week on account of his predecided commitments.

Barrister Farooque Naik who is also representing Khursheed Shah asked the bench to fix the date of the next hearing of the case.

Trial History

It is pertinent to mention here that the Multiple corruption cases against Khursheed Shah are under investigation with the agency.

In 2012, an accountability court had directed it to file a reference against him on a complaint pertaining to the alleged accumulation of illegitimate assets.

In 2013, the bureau had reopened two corruption cases against Shah under the directives of the Lahore High Court.

In July last year, NAB Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal had approved nine inquiries against different personalities, including PPP’s Khursheed Shah.
