The Consumer Court of Karachi has imposed a total fine of Rs. 120,000 on K Electric for not providing a new electricity connection after a lapse of three years.

Consumer Protection Court (East) Judge Javed Ali Korejo ordered K Electric Chairman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and IBC Johar 2 Manager to pay Rs. 70,000 on the complainant of Assadullah Mahesar.

In addition, the company has been required to deposit a fine of Rs 50,000 in the state exchequer within 30 days.

The judge said that if the company failed to pay the fine, those responsible for K Electric would be sentenced to at least one month under section 33 (two) of the Sindh Consumer Protection Act 2014, which was extended to three years. A fine of at least Rs 50,000 can be imposed which can be increased to Rs 2 lakh, or both the punishments can be given.

The court has given K Electric till December 19 to execute the orders and on that day the defendants will submit a report on compliance with the court orders.

Complainant Assadullah Mahesar had taken a stand in the petition filed in the court that he had applied for a new connection to K Electric in August 2017 and had also paid the fee for its advance expenses.

He had alleged that he kept visiting K Electric’s offices but to no avail, after which he lodged a complaint in the consumer court.
