Pakistan has on Monday received 500,000 doses of Sinopharm’s COVID-19 vaccine gifted by China by a special Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plane.

SAPM on Health Dr Faisal Sultan and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi informed about the Sinopharm vaccine’s arrival.

A special Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plane with the first tranche of coronavirus vaccine landed in Islamabad earlier today.

Taking to Twitter, SAPM Dr Faisal Sultan thanked China and everyone who made this happen and said the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) and provinces played an instrumental role in tackling COVID.

“I salute our front-line healthcare workers for their efforts & they’ll be first to get vaccinated,” he tweeted.

However, the Sindh government announces to begin the first phase of the coronavirus vaccination drive in the province from February 3.

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho said that in the first phase front-line workers, from private and public medical facilities, would be inoculated.

Sinopharm’s coronavirus vaccine is 90% effective against the virus, Dr Pechuho said.

She further added that the convenience of all Karachi districts has been considered.

In the second phase, people over the age of 60 will be vaccinated and in the last phase, the general public will be inoculated, the health minister said.

Moreover, during the last phase, the health minister said that the vaccination centres will be increased across the province’s districts to cater to the needs of the people.

On the other hand, the novel coronavirus outbreak  has claimed 26 more lives across the country in a single day.

According to the latest statistics by NCOC, as many as 1,615 new cases of coronavirus surfaced in the country during the last 24 hours after the tests of 34,785 people.  So far, 501,252 people have recovered from the disease.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country has soared to 546,428. Whereas, there are a total of 33,493 active cases.
