The active cases toll of coronavirus in Pakistan is witnessing a rising trend after the infection positivity rate varied between 5 and 6 percent in recent days.

According to the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC), all provinces have been asked to take immediate actions to ensure strict implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of the killer virus.

Pakistan, over the last 24 hours, reported 2,664 new cases, 32 deaths and 1,275 recoveries from the novel coronavirus. The active cases toll now stands at 21,121.

According to the National Dashboard, the total number of confirmed cases jumped to 605,200 with 13,508 deaths. Whereas the country has reported 570,571 recoveries so far.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar also chaired a special session of NCOC to review the current situation due to the pandemic. During the session, it was revealed that there was a sharp rise in national positivity, which was around 1 percent in September 2020 and 2 percent in January 2021.

The data, shared during the meeting, showed that major contributors are the Federal Capital Islamabad, several cities of Punjab, a few cities of KP and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Expressing serious concern on rising disease trend, the meeting decided that SOPs implementation week will be observed across the country from today onwards.

The meeting chaired by Asad Umar said vaccination drive for the elderly population is going and senior citizens are encouraged to get themselves vaccinated from designated vaccination centers.

The meeting directed provinces to ensure a smooth continuation of vaccination drive for health care workers and elderly citizen.
