Indus Water Treaty: Pakistan set to host next round of talks

Foreign Office has said that Pakistan and India have agreed to make endeavors to resolve issues relating to the Indus Water Treaty and conduct tours of inspection.

According to the statement, officials of Pakistan and India, during the meeting of Pakistan-India Permanent Indus Commission in New Delhi also agreed to hold next meeting in Pakistan.

As per the statement, under the relevant provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty, the meeting is held annually alternately in Pakistan and India. The Pakistan side was led by Commissioner for Indus Waters Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah.

Moreover, during the meeting, Pakistan officials also raised objections to the Indian projects including Pakal Dul, Lower Kulnai, Durbuk Shyok and Nimu Chilling.

The Pakistani delegation also urged the Indian side to share data of flood flows as per the provisions of the Treaty following the practice in vogue since 1989. Pakistan side emphasized the importance of early resolution of the outstanding issues in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty.

The 116th meeting of the India-Pakistan (PIC) was held in New Delhi from 23-24 March, 2021. Under the relevant provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), the meeting is held annually alternately in Pakistan and India.
