Construction work on the HVDC converter station in Nowshera has begun under the CASA-1000 project, a project to transfer 1,300 MW of hydropower from Tajikistan to Pakistan.

According to details, National Transmission and Dispatch Company Limited has started construction work on an HVDC converter station for a CASA-1000 power project in the Azakhel Bala Nowshera area of ​​Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to supply 1300 MW power from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan to Pakistan from Afghanistan.

Under the project, construction of a 1270 km long transmission line to Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan is also underway, which will be completed by 2023, while construction of converter station will be completed by 2024.

The  $205 million project agreement was signed, the spokesman said, adding that NTDC had achieved another milestone in the power transmission system.

Under the CASA-1000 power project, 1,300 megawatts of hydropower will be transferred from Tajikistan to Pakistan in the summer, helping to meet the country’s growing demand.

In this regard, a 1270 km long transmission line is also under construction, while in Pakistan NTDC is constructing a 113 km long HVDC transmission line from the Torkham border to the Nowshera converter station, according to the site of the converter station. The construction of the four walls has been completed.

The transmission line will be completed by 2023, the spokesman said, adding that the HVDC converter station project will be completed by 2024, according to the agreement’s completion period.

The total cost of the transmission line from Converter Station and Torkham Border to Nowshera is US 20 205 million, said Dr Khawaja Rifat Hassan, Managing Director, NTDC Engineer at the commencement of construction of the project. Appreciated the team’s efforts.
