Legislation on EVM challenged in Islamabad High Court

ISLAMABAD: The newly-promulgated legislation on the electronic voting machine (EVM) has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday.
Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Athar Minallah declared the petition of the citizen incomplete and asked what provisions of the electronic voting machine legislation did the petitioner object to.
The petitioner replied that the electronic voting machine was a fraudulent scheme and the legislation should be declared null and void.
“Provisions of electronic voting machine legislation are unconstitutional?” the chief justice questioned.
The honourable judge expressed annoyance and gave remarks that such incomplete petitions should face penalties.
Petitioner Fidaullah requested the court to grant respite for the validity of the petition.
The Islamabad High Court has granted respite to the citizen’s plea.

Last month, a joint session of parliament passed 33 crucial bills, including the controversial Election (Second Amendment) Bill 2021, and granting voting rights to overseas Pakistanis.
The Election (Second Amendment) Bill 2021 has been one of the most controversial bills of the government as it would enable the ECP to use EVMs in polls.
Later, President Arif Alvi signed the Election (Amendment) Bill 2021 into law.
The Act aims to hold the next general elections through the EVM as well as grants the right of vote to the overseas Pakistanis through I-voting.
