ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has increased electricity price by Rs2.86 per unit.

Through a notification, the NEPRA announced that the electricity price was increased in terms of fuel adjustment for March. Consequently, an additional burden of Rs29 billion will be borne by the consumers, the regulatory authority said.

The price increment was decided during a hearing held on request of the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) on April 27. This price will not be applicable to the K-Electric consumers.

On the flip side, electricity has been increased by Rs1.38 per unit for the consumers of K-Electric. Electricity has been increased for Karachi in terms of fuel adjustment for February, as per a notification issued by the NEPRA in this regard.

Resultantly, an additional burden of Rs1.58 billion would be on consumers.

It is pertinent here to mention that the KE had demanded an increase of Rs3.15 a unit.

On March 1, in response to the then government’s slashing petrol and electricity prices, veteran Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Miftah Ismail had lashed out at the then government for toying with the nation’s emotions by first sharply raising the prices and then cutting down some of them.

In a tweet, Miftah Ismail had said the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) never had money to give relief to the people. However, he had said the party found a way to save the then prime minister Imran Khan’s job.

“Days ago the government raised petrol prices by Rs12 and electricity prices by Rs6. Today, the government decreased their prices by Rs10 and Rs5. Did economics change in the last few days or has the politics?” he had wondered.
