KARACHI: Sindh Health Department has formed 10-member medical board – considered the largest ever – to determine the age of teenage girl Dua Zehra.

According to a notification shared by lawyer Jibran Nasir, the medical board consists of experts from radiology, gynecology, dentistry and forensics.

The board will be chaired by Dow Medical College Principal Prof Saba Sohail. The board consists of Medical Superintendent Services Hospital Dr Zubair Agha and police surgeon Dr Summiya Syed along with experts from different departments.

The girl is expected to be presented before the board for a check-up on June 29 (today) at 12.30 PM in the offices of MS Services Hospital and Civil Surgeon Karachi.

The board will then present a report in the Sindh High Court. Judicial Magistrate East had ordered further investigation of the case and constituted a medical board to determine the actual age of the girl.

During her court appearance, Dua Zehra claimed she was 18 years of age while a medical test ordered by the Sindh High Court determined she was aged around 17. Her parents claim she is aged 14 and thus the marriage is illegal as per Sindh’s laws.

The health department informed local court about the formation of a medical board headed by Dow Medical College Principal Saba Sohail to ascertain the real age of the teenage girl.

Meanwhile, the father of Dua Zehra has approached court to change the investigating officer in the case.

Mehdi Kazmi has filed a petition in Session and District Court through lawyer Jibran Nasir to replace the investigating officer in the alleged kidnapping case of his daughter. The complainant said the present investigation officer’s behaviour seems biased and the family has no trust in him.

The Supreme Court (SC) wrapped up the case after Dua’s father withdrew a petition filed in the apex court challenging the SHC’s decision allowing the girl to decide her own fate.

A three-member bench of the apex, comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, announced the reserved verdict. The top court asked Mehdi Kazmi to approach the relevant forum for the formation of the medical board in the case.
