Pakistan Army rescues victims of boat capsize incident

MULTAN: Pakistan Army troops including Special Services Group (SSG) commando divers continued a search operation to rescue the remaining individuals after a boat capsized on the River Indus.

An overloaded boat carrying around 100 persons overturned in the Indus River near Sadiqabad Tehsil in Rahim Yar Khan earlier this week. More than 50 bodies have been fished out from the river.

According to a release issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Multan, the army responded immediately to the special directions of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and participated in the rescue operation.

Pakistan Army sent a rescue team with divers of SSG commandos, Army Medical Team, Army Field Engineers, and other supporting forces with necessary equipment to carry out the search operation.

The civil administration said they were about 94 people on board the boat when it capsized on Monday, out of whom 45 people were rescued. However, a search operation was launched to retrieve the remaining missing bodies.

During the ongoing search operation by the Pakistan Army, the bodies of 27 people have been recovered from the river so far, while search for remaining 22 missing persons was still underway

The death toll from a boat carrying a wedding party has reportedly surpassed 50 after officials said there was no hope of finding more survivors.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed condolences and his deep grief and sorrow over loss of precious lives in the incident.

On his Twitter handle, the prime minister prayed for the departed souls and for the bereaved families to bear the losses with equanimity.
