PTI summons core committee meeting after victory in Punjab bypolls

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has summoned a meeting of the core committee on Monday (today) after the party’s victory in the Punjab bypolls.

Chairman PTI Imran Khan will preside over the core committee meeting at his residence in Bani Gala. The PTI barred party leaders in Punjab from participating while video link and summoned them to Islamabad.

The core committee will discuss its strategy after the results of the bypolls. It will also discuss the use of state machinery and incidents of rigging in the by-elections.

Imran Khan will decide the future of the Punjab government in the meeting. It will also take into consideration the suggestions of the PTI central leadership. Before a meeting, the party’s central and provincial leadership will also hold a consultative session.

PTI Central Punjab President Dr Yasmin Rashid, General Secretary Hamad Azhar have been called to attend the meeting in Islamabad. Senior leader Mian Mehmood-ul-Rashid, opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Sibtain Khan and Jamshed Iqbal Cheema will also attend the meeting.

The meeting has been called after the PTI won 15 seats of the Punjab Assembly in by-elections held in 20 constituencies of the province.

According to unofficial results, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) obtained four seats while one seat was won by an independent candidate.

Earlier, PTI Chairman Imran Khan congratulated party workers and voters on victory in by-elections against “the entire state machinery, harassment by police and a totally biased [Election Commission of Pakistan]”.

He also thanked the allied parties – Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and Sunni Ittehad Council – for their support in Punjab by-elections.

Imran Khan said the only way forward from here was to hold fair and free elections under a ‘credible’ election commission. “Any other path will only lead to greater political uncertainty and further economic chaos,” he added.
