ISLAMABAD: The resignations of 123 Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) National Assembly members were deemed “suspicious” by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after being informed that the lawmakers were not asked to appear before the National Assembly speaker in their individual capacities.

The appeal objecting to the resignation of PTI MNA Abdul Shakoor Shad was heard by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah.

Abdul Shakoor Shad was among the eleven lawmakers whose resignations were accepted by NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on July 28. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had issued a notification in this regard.

However, Shakoor Shad approached the IHC and stated he had not resigned from his seat. Shad said he submitted a computerised letter to express solidarity with then prime minister Imran Khan.

The court suspended a notification ECP for declaring NA-246 Lyari as vacant. The court directed him to join the proceedings of the National Assembly and issued notices to the Speaker and National Assembly secretariat for their response on the matter.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that the notification of the then National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri was declared unconstitutional in an earlier judgment.

Meanwhile, the PTI issued him a show-cause notice to Abdul Shakoor Shad for filing a petition in the Islamabad High Court and stating that he had never resigned as an MNA.

PTI Sindh chapter issued a notice and suspended Shad’s party membership. The notice said that Shad stated “countless times, both verbally and in writing”, that he had resigned but he “suddenly went against the party policy” and filed in a petition in the IHC contradicting his statements and saying he had never resigned.

On the other hand, Imran Khan announced to hold another telethon to raise funds for the flood-affectees, after the Asia Cup final, at 11:00 pm on Sunday night.

The announcement was made by Imran Khan in an interview with Senior Bol News Anchorperson Sami Ibrahim.
