Minor girl raped in Karachi was not a flood victim: Shehla Raza

KARACHI: Sindh Women Development Minister Syeda Shehla Raza has said the minor who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in Clifton area was not a flood victim.

The provincial minister visited Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where the child is receiving treatment. She expressed grief over the tragic incident and directed the doctors to provide all medical facilities to the victim.

She also assured to provide all possible legal assistance to the victim’s mother and bring the culprits to book as soon as possible.

Shehla Raza clarified that the girl’s father has passed away and her mother had come to Karachi with her five children due to poverty. She said the rising cases of child molestation and sexual abuse require strict punishment for the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

She further said that police should include strict legal provisions in registering cases of rape and sexual assault and courts should also give strict punishments to the criminals.

Shehla Raza gave a message to the parents that they should not leave their children at the mercy of such beasts and take care of them.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah had directed Women Development Minister Shehla Raza to keep the entire family under protective custody, after which the family has been kept in the women’s police station.

Earlier police had said the minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by two unidentified persons at a camp established to house the flood affectees near the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in Clifton.

She was later shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) after her health deteriorated. The medico-legal report to ascertain sexual assault allegations confirmed that the minor girl was gang-raped.

The police surgeon’s office at the JPMC said that gang rape has been confirmed after a complete medical examination of the victim. It said that the victim was staying at the camp where the incident took place. The victim is around 8-9 years old.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali had took strict notice of the incident and directed the police officials to arrest the accused immediately. He directed police to take the girl and her family members into protective custody.

He called Additional IG Karachi Javed Odho and said that such incidents are unacceptable and cannot be forgiven, therefore, the accused persons need to be behind bars at any cost.

Additional IG Karachi informed the chief minister that he ordered SSP South to register an FIR at Boat Basin police station and started the investigation into the matter.

The chief minister was informed that Additional IG Karachi has formed a police team to arrest the suspects and bring them to justice. He directed police official check CCTV footage to identify the suspect vehicle and arrest them immediately after identification.
