LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has sought a fresh report from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding the investigation against interior minister Rana Sanaullah for possessing assets beyond income.

A two-member bench of Lahore High Court comprising Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Justice Asjad Javed heard the request of the federal minister.

Advocate Amjad Pervaiz represented Rana Sanaullah while Special Prosecutor Syed Faisal Raza Bukhari appeared in the court on behalf of the anti-graft watchdog.

The counsel for Rana Sanuallah told the court that the case has been pending for three years and a fresh response should be sought from NAB. He said the application was filed in 2019 but the investigation was not complete.

The court directed Special Prosecutor to submit a fresh report from the NAB authorities at the next hearing. The hearing has been adjourned till November 2.

Rana Sanaullah had submitted a petition stating that NAB has started an inquiry regarding assets in excess of income.

The petitioner said he also appeared in the inquiry and provided evidence regarding his assets. The petitioner’s lawyer requested the court to dismiss the NAB reference.

It must be mentioned that Rana Sanaullah did not appear before the court during the last hearing held on 27 April 2021. During the last hearing, the bench had noted that the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) was also conducting a probe against Rana Sanaullah for acquiring wealth through the drug trade.

Rana Sanaullah had been arrested by the ANF on 1 July 2019 for possessing 15kg of heroin in his vehicle while traveling from Faisalabad to Lahore. PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry admitted that the drug smuggling case was fabricated and shouldn’t have been lodged.
