New COAS Lieutenant General Asim Munir – A snapshot

ISLAMABAD: After days of speculations and waiting, finally the pick of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has surfaced and he is Lieutenant General Asim Munir who is going to succeed General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

The announcement came a few minutes back and was confirmed by the Minister of Information Marriyum Aurangzeb who also announced that the next Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

The summary of the appointments has been sent to the President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi and is pending his approval.

Who the new COAS is?

Lt Gen Munir entered the service via the Officers Training School programme in Mangla and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment.

Lt Gen Munir was later appointed Military Intelligence director general in early 2017 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in September 2018 while in October next year he was made the ISI chief.

His four-year tenure as Lt Gen is ending on November 27 and he is currently serving as a Quartermaster general in the Pakistan Army.
