KARACHI: Shahrukh Jatoi, the prime accused in the 2012 murder of Shahzeb Khan, and his accomplices have been released from Malir jail.

The Sindh High Court has written a letter to the Anti-Terrorism Court for the release of Shahrukh Jatoi and others. The letter has been sent to the Superintendent Central Jail.

The letter states that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has accepted the appeals of the accused in the Shahzeb murder case. It said the apex court has ordered the release of all suspects in the case including Shahrukh Jatoi, Siraj Talpur and Sajjad Talpur

The Anti-Terrorism Court had awarded death sentence to accused Shahrukh Jatoi and Siraj Talpur, while Sajjad Talpur was sentenced to life imprisonment

The Sindh High Court had commuted the death sentence of accused Shahrukh Jatoi and Siraj Talpur to life imprisonment. The accused had approached the Supreme Court against the decision.

On October 18, the Supreme Court acquitted Shahrukh Jatoi and his accomplices in the Shahzeb Khan murder case. A three-member SC bench comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Sayyed Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi heard the case.

Shahzeb Khan was gunned down in 2012 in Karachi’s defence area over a petty dispute. The incident garnered immense media attention and a large number of people had protested over the decision.

A couple of months after the sentence was passed, Shahzeb’s parents had given a formal pardon to the convicts, approved by the Sindh High Court (SHC).

During the course of proceedings, Latif Khosa, counsel for Shahrukh Jatoi said that the formal pardon had already been given. He said his clients had no intention to spread terror.

The counsel said the murder event was presented as a case of terrorism and sections of Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) were added unnecessarily. The court acquitted all four suspects.
