QUETTA: A high-level delegation comprising religious scholars and tribal elders from Balochistan left for Afghanistan to discuss the border situation.

The delegation left for Afghanistan from the border town of Chaman in Balochistan. The negotiating delegation from Pakistan includes 16 people comprising of religious scholars, tribal elders and traders. The delegation is headed by Qari Aslam Alamyar, a prominent religious scholar of Chaman.

The members of the delegation will meet Kandahar Governor Haji Muhammad Wafa and hold discussions to end the recent tension along the Pak-Afghan border in Balochistan.

The delegation will discuss the border situation with Afghan officials in Kandahar and return after two days.

It must be mentioned that tensions are high after clashes broke out between Pakistan and Afghanistan at the Chaman border in recent days.

On December 15, Afghan border forces opened unprovoked and indiscriminate fire using heavy weapons at civilian areas in Chaman, killing one person and injuring 15 others.

Levies officials reported that multiple artillery rounds were fired upon the civilian population from the Afghan side during the repair of a border fence. The Pakistani armed forces gave a befitting response to Afghan shelling and evacuated the border area.

This was the second attack within five days by Afghan border forces in Chaman. During the previous attack, six people were martyred and 17 others were injured.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Afghan border forces used artillery and mortar in the attack. It said that Pakistan’s troops gave a befitting albeit measured response against the uncalled-for aggression, but avoided targeting innocent civilians in the area.

The statement added the Pakistani border forces have also approached Afghan authorities in Kabul to highlight the severity of the situation and demanded strict action to avoid any such recurrence of the incident in the future.
