PPP’s Waqar Mehdi elected unopposed on Senate seat

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Waqar Mehdi has been elected unopposed as a member of the Senate in the by-election.

The polling for the vacant seat of the Upper House of Parliament from Sindh were scheduled to be held on December 8. Waqar Mehdi was elected unopposed after the other candidates withdrew from the polls.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) had also fielded candidates in the by-election but it withdrew their nomination papers before the polling date.

A covering candidate of the PPP also withdrew his nomination papers. PPP leaders and workers congratulated Waqar Mehdi on being elected senator unopposed.

Waqar Mehdi is the PPP Sindh General Secretary who also serves as Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh on political communication.

A day earlier, the MQM had announced its support for PPP candidate Waqar Mehdi for the Senate election allowing him to win unopposed.

A delegation of the PPP led by Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah reached the MQM-P headquarters in Bahadurabad to hold talks with the MQM leadership.

After the meeting, MQM Deputy Convener Waseem Akhtar said the party’s Rabita Committee has decided after consultation to withdraw MQM-P candidate from the Senate election.

Sindh Minister Nasir Shah thanked the MQM leadership and said Waqar Mehdi will be elected to the Senate unopposed.

He termed the amiable resolution of the Senate seat a positive development in Sindh’s politics. He also hailed the improved working relations between both parties.

He said the next Karachi Administrator belonging to the MQM will be appointed within a few days while the discussion on constituencies is also going on and soon there will be progress on the matter.
