LAHORE: After a break of 12 days, the lawyers in Punjab called off their strike for a week following an assurance given by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial for resolving the issues relating to the conviction of a sitting member of Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) on a contempt charge by the Lahore High Court (LHC) and registration of terrorism cases against the lawyers.

In a statement issued by the PbBC, it announced to defer its ongoing boycott of courts for one week and directed lawyers to attend the court proceedings.

A delegation comprising vice chairmen of all provincial bar councils in the country apprised CJP Bandial about the deadlock between the bar and the bench in Punjab.

It said the chief justice assured the delegation that the issues faced by the legal fraternity would be resolved within a week.

The statement said further strategy of the protest would be devised if the issues were not resolved during the period of one week as promised by the chief justice.
