• Special JIT submitted progress report to SCP

ISLAMABAD: The special Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to probe the murder of anchorperson Arshad Sharif submitted its progress report to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The Special JIT will visit Nairobi on January 15 to report evidence regarding the murder of the renowned journalist who was brutally murdered in Kenya in October last year.

According to the compliance report submitted in court, Arshad Sharif‘s post-mortem report will be submitted to the Supreme Court as soon as it is received from Kenya.

The SC registrar’s office had declared the copy of Arshad Sharif’s post-mortem report inadmissible. After the objection was removed, the registrar’s office accepted the progress report.

The special JIT was formed on the directives of the Supreme Court to probe the murder of the journalist. The court took notice of the murder and sought the registration of the FIR within a day.

The team received a detailed briefing from the fact-finding committee formed by the federal government and received testimonies of several people.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has fixed suo motu case of prominent journalist Arshad Sharif’s assassination for hearing on Thursday.

A five-member larger bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial will conduct the hearing on the case on January 5.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar, Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazahar are also part of the bench.

Last month, CJP Bandial noted that the apex court wanted an honest and impartial investigation. He hoped that progress would be made in different areas of the probe.

While hearing the case, the Chief Justice remarked that in case the Special JIT experienced any administrative issues, it may directly approach his office.

Additional Attorney General Chaudhry stated that necessary funds and support will be provided to the team. He also assured the court that the Foreign Office will be requested to facilitate coordination for visas and assistance in the foreign jurisdiction.
