LAHORE: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has appointed Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi as Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.

The election commission appointed Mohsin Naqvi as interim chief minister of the province under Article 224-A of the Constitution.

The Chief Election Commissioner and the four members of the election commission unanimously approved the name of Mohsin Raza Naqvi for the post.

It must be mentioned that Naqvi’s name was recommended by the opposition. The PML-N had also recommended the name of former bureaucrat Ahad Cheema for the post. Mohsin Naqvi is a media owner and runs a private TV channel.

The notification for the appointment has been issued and sent to the governor. An important meeting of the ECP was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.

The election commission decided on the appointment after the parliamentary committee, comprising of members of the government and opposition, failed to reach a consensus.
