• LG polls once again postponed in Karachi

• Sindh govt took decision due to reservation of MQM

KARACHI: The local government (LG) polls in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Dadu – scheduled for January 15 – are once again postponed as announced by the Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon in the early hours of Friday.

The development drew severe criticism from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamat-e-Islami (JI).

Sharjeel Inam Memon while addressing a press conference said that the government withdrew the notification regarding the delimitations and announced that MQM has reservations over it which is why the provincial government decided not to hold the polls on January 15 in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Dadu.

He added that LG elections in the remaining districts of Sindh will be held as per schedule.
The announcement came after the meeting of CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah with the cabinet regarding the threats given by MQM to quit the coalition.

“They (MQM-P) are our allies in the federal government and we take the concerns of our allies very seriously,” Memon said.

The second round of LG polls was initially scheduled for July 24 last year but the Sindh government delayed the elections due to a lack of security amid floods.

Later, the elections were again postponed on August 28, October 23 and now January 15.
