LG polls: PPP wins in Badin, Thatta with majority

KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has won majority of the local government seats in Badin, Thatta and Sujawal districts on Sunday.

As per the unofficial and unconfirmed results, the PPP defeated its opponents in a landslide in Thatta by clean sweeping in four out of five town committees – Makli, Gharo, Keti Bandar and Ghora Bari. On the seat of Town Committee Mirpur Sakro an independent candidate won election.

Whereas, 14 wards out of 12 in Badin Municipal Committee have been won by the PPP, the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf won on ward no 1 and Grand Democratic Alliance won on ward no 2.

The long-awaited Local Government (LG) elections were held in Karachi, Hyderabad and eight other districts of Sindh.

The voter turnout was not high while there were reports of clashes and allegations of rigging and mismanagement at various polling stations.

The main contest is between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Jamaat-e-Islami amid the boycott by the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM).

Over 3.4 million people exercised their right to elect the local government. The polling took place in seven districts of Karachi and 9 districts including Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta, and Sujawal.
