LAHORE: Naan sellers have announced to stage a protest on January 12 against the hike in flour prices, BOL News reported.

Nanbais Association of Punjab held a meeting under the chairmanship of President Aftab Gul and decided to stage a protest in front of the Chief Secretariat Lahore

The meeting expressed concern over the unchecked increase in price of flour (atta) and white flour (maida). They discussed increasing the price of naan and roti due to the increase in flour prices.

Aftab Gul said the fine flour is rising and forcing them to sell roti at Rs35 and naan at Rs40. He said they cannot sell roti at Rs15 and naan for Rs25 due to the high flour prices.

He urged the government to provide cheaper fine flour at tandoors. He said the government should provide subsidized flour if they want them to sell naan at lower rates.

Meanwhile, flour prices have increased for the eighth time in the span of two months in Lahore while the basic commodity is not even available in shops.

The price of 1kg bag has increased by Rs10 and is now being sold at Rs160 in Lahore. In other parts of the province, the price of flour has reached Rs150 per kg.

The shortage and increased prices of wheat have caused the hike in flour prices. The price of wheat has reached Rs5,000 per maund in the grain markets.

Since the fall of the PTI government in April last year, the price of wheat has doubled in the country. Wheat was traded at Rs2,200 per maund in markets across the province.

The rate has now reached Rs5,000 because of political reasons and administrative failure of the provincial governments who are releasing limited wheat stocks while anticipating high demand during the holy month of Ramzan.
