LAHORE: Punjab authorities have decided against extending winter vacations in schools and colleges due to the extreme cold weather.
It was earlier reported that winter vacations in public and private educational institutes were being extended for one week from January 9 to January 15. The authorities had announced two weeks of winter vacation ending on Jan 9.
School Education Department (SED) and Higher Education Department (HED) have decided against extending the winter holidays. Both public and private schools and colleges will resume educational activities on January 9.
School Education Department has taken a decision against extending winter vacations in the province which is facing a cold wave and worst air quality.
Deputy Secretary School Education Department Punjab Chaudhry Naveed Deerath shared a tweet announcing the winter vacations will not be extended.
“Till now, The Winter vacations in Schools are not going to be extended. Not even under consideration. Pls don’t run behind rumours,” he wrote.
On 29 December, SED and HED extended the winter vacations in public and private schools and colleges till 8 January after a sudden drop in temperature.
SED and HED had announced winter vacations in schools and colleges from 24 to 31 December. The educational institutes were scheduled to reopen on January 2, but the closure was extended till January 8, 2023.
Last month, Lahore High Court directed extending winter vacations amid worsening smog conditions in the provincial capital.
The government also announced three-day closure of schools in a week in wake of alarming levels of smog in the provincial capital. Authorities declared an environmental emergency and decided to close educational institutions amid rising pollution.
