Peshawar explosion: Police was target of suicide bomber, says interior minister

PESHAWAR: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Monday said target of the suicide bomber in Peshawar was police officials, Bol News reported.

At least 17 people had died in the blast and more casualties were feared, he said talking to Bol News. The interior minister said actions were being taken at every level against the terrorists.

“The attack cannot be termed as security failure. Police are fighting against terrorists with full might,” he said adding that they could not make intelligence information on Swabi operation public.

Rana Sanaullah said negative comments of terrorism would encourage terrorists. People and security forces could jointly thwart terrorist, he maintained.

He apprised that threats were received from terrorists.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan condemned the terrorist attack and asked the authorities concerned to improve the intelligence gathering and equip police forces to combat terrorism.

He also prayed for families of the victims.

Imran Khan tweeted, “(I) Strongly condemn the terrorist suicide attack in police lines mosque Peshawar during prayers. My prayers & condolences go to victims families. It is imperative we improve our intelligence gathering & properly equip our police forces to combat the growing threat of terrorism.”

At least 17 people died and more than 100 others got injured in a blast that took place near Police Lines in Peshawar on Monday, Bol News reported.

The explosion reportedly happened inside a mosque during Zuhr prayer, resultantly building of the worshipping place was also damaged. Police said they were determining the nature of the blast.
