• Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has decided to contest the by-elections
• He will contest as an independent candidate from NA-59 Rawalpindi
• The nomination form will be submitted on Feb 8

RAWALPINDI: Disgruntled Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has decided to contest the by-election from NA-59 Rawalpindi constituency.

According to reports, the former interior minister has collected the nomination forms for the by-polls which will be submitted to the returning officer on Feb 8.

There are at least 15 others candidates who have submitted their forms for the constituency. The last date for the submission of nomination forms is tomorrow (Feb 8). The by-polls for the vacant seat will be held on March 16.

Earlier Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said he would contest upcoming elections for the national and provincial assemblies as an independent candidate.

Nisar said he would take a decision about joining a political party after the elections. He added that Imran Khan is his friend and joining the PTI could hurt their relationship.

In 2018 general elections, Nisar contested two National Assembly seats and one Punjab Assembly seat but he lost both NA seats but managed to bag the provincial seat.

In June 2018, he parted ways with PML-N and announced to run for the general elections as an independent candidate. Imran Khan offered Khan to join PTI before 2018 general elections.

He was re-elected to the Punjab Assembly as an independent candidate from Constituency PP-10 (Rawalpindi-V) in the 2018 election. He received 53,212 votes and defeated independent candidate Naseer-ul-Husnain Shah.

In the same election, he also ran for the seat in the National Assembly as an independent candidate from NA-59 (Rawalpindi-III) and NA-63 (Rawalpindi-VII) Constituency but was unsuccessful

In 2019, a petition was filed in the Lahore High Court against Khan directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to de-notify him for his failure to take oath. He eventually took oath as Member of Punjab Assembly on 26 May 2021 after a span of more than two years.
