ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has notified Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nisar Ahmed Khuhro as a senator.

The electoral body issued a notified the success of Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on a general seat in Sindh that fell vacant due to the resignation of former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Vawda.

According to a notification issued here, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, son of Muhammad Nawaz Khuro, has been elected unopposed as a member of the Senate on a seat that fell vacated by former federal minister Faisal Vawda.

On December 28 last year, Faisal Vawda had resigned from the Senate after parting ways with the PTI. The Election Commission had earlier disqualified Vawda in a case pertaining to possessing dual citizenship.

He had challenged his lifetime disqualification in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which reinstated his Senate membership.

The election commission withdrew its notification regarding the vacated seat of Faisal Vawda, and as a result, Khukhro, who was elected unopposed, lost his Senate membership.

After the restoration of Vawda’s membership post-SC verdict, the politician was able tender his resignation. He resigned in late December.

On November 25, the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan had overturned a decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to disqualify former PTI leader Faisal Vawda for life.

A three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial announced the decision after Vawda rendered an unconditional apology before the court.

The former federal minister appeared before the court and tendered an apology after the top court gave him two options – to confess his mistake and accept disqualification Article 63(1)(c) or the court will proceed under clause 62(1)f.

Vawda had challenged his lifetime disqualification following a verdict issued by the ECP.
