ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday expressed grief over the death of renowned poet and writer Amjad Islam Amjad, calling it an irreparable loss to Urdu literature.

They paid tribute to the services of the award-winning poet and playwright and said the gulf created by his death in the field of literature could not be bridged.

The president said that late Amjad Islam Amjad rendered invaluable services for the Urdu language and literature which would be kept alive forever.

Remembering him as the greatest poet of his time, the prime minister said Amjad Islam Amjad translated human sentiments into the language as per culture and tradition.

He said Amjad Islam Amjad was personally a great human being and a household name for every Pakistani with an interest in education and literature. The prime minister said the late poet proved his mettle in all forms of literature.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said with Amjad Islam Amjad’s death, a great chapter of Urdu literature had come to an end. He said through his works, the late writer nurtured the ideology of the new generation.

The president and prime minister prayed to Allah Almighty for peace of the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to cope with the loss.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the demise of the famous poet,

“A great person who represented the rights and sentiments of the people has left the world today,” she said in a condolence message.

She said the poet dedicated 50 years of his life to Urdu literature and left a “precious asset” in the form of his contribution to Urdu literature for the nation.

The minister recalled one of his famous dramas ‘Waris’ terming it a masterpiece. She said the meritorious services rendered by Amjad Islam Amjad in the literary world would long be remembered.

She prayed to Allah Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul and grant of courage to members of the bereaved family to bear this loss with equanimity.

Literary icon and renowned Urdu poet and columnist Amjad Islam Amjad passed away in Lahore on Friday due to cardiac arrest at the age of 78.

Amjad Islam Amjad was born on 4th August, 1944 in Lahore. He had also been writing drama series, columns, and lyrics (nazm).

He authored more than 40 books in his career that span over 50 years. He received many awards for his literary work and screenplay for TV, including Pride of Performance and Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
