ISLAMABAD – Fawad Chaudhry, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was granted bail in a sedition case by an Islamabad court on Wednesday.

The former federal minister was imprisoned on charges of sedition after publicly “threatening” the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) members in a television interview.

Babar Awan, the senior vice president of the PTI, requested the additional sessions judge to approve his client’s bail at the beginning of today’s hearing. He claimed that the country did not think that someone should be charged with such a crime for saying just two words.

The court then asked the lawyer about what Fawad meant when he threatened the family members of the ECP officials after asking Awan to read the charges against the PTI leader.

Fawad is a senior lawyer and a member of parliament, the judge said. In response, Awan claimed that Shireen Mazari, the PTI leader, had previously been referred to as “tractor trolley.”
