KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday takes up the case of mysterious deaths in Keamari area of Karachi allegedly due to toxic gas.

I.G. Police Sindh, Advocate General and other officials appeared in the high court.

The court inquired IG police how many people have died recently and whether the cases have been registered of the deaths.

The IG Police replied that 18 deaths took place and the cases were not registered as the families didn’t reach the police with complaints.

“The police had registered cases if people come with their complaints,” police officer replied.

The chief justice SHC being irked with the statement maintained that it was responsibility of the SHO to file the case of deaths on behalf of the state

“Why the police wait for an application for case registration,” he questioned. “How could the cause of deaths come to surface without inquiry,” the judge further asked.

The court also said that how can the police windup a case without autopsy of the dead ones.

“How you are investigating, there are many deaths but only one postmortem,” Justice Yousaf Ali Saeed remarked.

The bench slammed the police chief and remarked that he should not remain on the office. “The state should be complainant in such cases and the case should be registered even the affected party fails to appear,” the court observed.
