LAHORE: A delegation of lawmakers from United States (US) called on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.
The delegation of US lawmakers from the state of California called on Imran Khan at his residence in Zaman Park in Lahore and discussed matters of mutual interest.
The 12-member delegation was led by Pakistani-origin US Democrat leader Dr Asif Mahmood. The delegation comprised of Speaker California State Assembly Anthony Rendon and Majority Leader Eloise Reyes,
The delegation included California State Assembly legislator Chris R. Holden, Chairperson Appropriations Committee Chris Howden Spencer, Chief of Democratic Caucus Mike Gibson, Chairperson Small Business Wendy Carrillo, Farooq Arshad, Arshad Cheema, and Khalid Nazir.
The delegation has also met the caretaker chief minister, governor of Punjab, and former chief minister during their visit to Pakistan.
During the meeting, the discussed Pakistan-US relations and promotion and stability of democracy. They also discussed matters related to the supremacy of the constitution and the protection of fundamental human rights.
Speaking on the occasion, Imran Khan said Pakistan is considered an important country in the Islamic world in terms of geography and has a significant role in in establishing peace in South Asia.
The former primer minister said that he believes in peaceful solutions to conflicts through dialogue. The visiting delegation appreciated the PTI’s role in the development of democracy in the country.
Last month, PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry met United States Ambassador Donald Blome and senior officers and apprised them of worsening human rights situation in the country.
After the meeting, Fawad Chaudhry said in a Twitter thread, “Had a good meeting with US ambassador and senior officials. The worsening HR situation in Pak was a particular focus of discussion.”
“I apprised US officials on PTI concerns on the misuse of Anti-Terrorism and Blasphemy laws by the PDM Govt against political opponents.”
He added that the political situation and PTI position on various issues came under discussion. He said meetings are part of a mutual desire to have a relationship based on equality and wellbeing of people.
