NADRA, the National Database and Registration Authority of Pakistan, is responsible for managing the national identity database and issuing ID cards. Recently, concerns have arisen about the illegal issuance of ID cards and cybersecurity at NADRA. In response, NADRA has issued a press release to address these issues.

NADRA explained that the issuance of fake ID cards can occur due to factors both external and internal. External factors include unreliable supporting documents, verification processes, attestation, and legal gaps. Internal factors involve a small number of employees engaging in malpractices for financial gain.

NADRA has implemented new measures to combat these issues, such as biometric verification of parents and blood relatives, SMS notifications to the head of the family, two-factor authentication, and enhanced internal oversight. These efforts have helped identify and prevent attempts to issue illegal ID cards.

NADRA has also taken disciplinary actions against wrongdoers and streamlined the departmental accountability process. Internal inquiries have resulted in penalties and terminations for those involved in wrongdoing. Additionally, a joint investigation team (JIT) has been established to investigate illegal ID card issuances and other related documents.
