ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered the removal of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Ahad Cheema from his position. Ahad Cheema, a former civil servant with over 15 years of service in grade BPS-20, previously served as an advisor to former PM Shehbaz Sharif on establishment matters.

The decision was rendered following a hearing on petitions challenging federal ministers and advisers regarding their political affiliations. Notices had been issued by the Election Commission to Federal Minister for Privatization Fawad Hassan Fawad, Adviser Ahad Cheema, and the Principal Secretary to the PM, Tauqeer Shah.

The ECP’s verdict specifically instructed the Secretary Cabinet Division to remove Ahad Cheema from his role as SAPM. The electoral body justified its decision by pointing out that Cheema had been part of the former cabinet, and his continued presence in the current caretaker cabinet had the potential to “impact” the election results.

It is worth noting that Ahad Cheema, the former chief of Lahore Development Authority (LDA), had recently been acquitted by an accountability court in a case related to assets exceeding known sources of income.
