NEPRA announces increase of tariff by Rs1.15 per unit
ISLAMABAD: In another unsettling development for the already burdened electricity consumers, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has officially announced an increase of Rs1.15 per unit in the electricity tariff.
As per the notification released by the regulatory authority, NEPRA has sanctioned the tariff hike in light of the monthly fuel adjustment for the first quarter of the current financial year. The notification states that consumers will be required to make additional payments on their bills for January to March 2024.
This increment in electricity tariff is expected to impose an additional financial burden of Rs22.297 billion on power consumers. The hike is applicable to all consumer categories except lifeline consumers and users of K-Electric.
Earlier today, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted an application to NEPRA, advocating for an increase of Rs4.66 per unit. The CPPA, acting on behalf of power distribution companies (DISCOs), has urged NEPRA to approve this increase under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for November 2023.
In its application, the CPPA stated that the total electricity generated from various fuels in February 2023 amounted to 7.22 billion at a basket price of Rs9.44 per unit. It is noteworthy that on December 6, NEPRA had already raised the electricity tariff by Rs3.07 per unit as part of the monthly fuel adjustment; however, this increase did not apply to lifeline and K-Electric consumers.
