Environmental Move: Orange Line Train to Adopt Solar Power

LAHORE: Taking a significant step toward sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation, Lahore is preparing to transition the Orange Line train to solar power. The caretaker provincial transport minister, Ibrahim Hasan Murad, made this announcement.

The transport minister of Punjab also disclosed that discussions with NESPAK, following recommendations from the Energy Department, are in the concluding phases.

After the study is finished, anticipated to be within three months of finalizing the agreement with NESPAK, the solarization project for the Orange Line train will kick off, according to Murad’s statement.

Critical components of the initiative involve placing solar panels at key sites such as depots, stabling yards, and stations along the Orange Line. The Provincial Superintendent confirmed that solar grid stations are planned for construction at Stubbing Yard and Orange Train Depot, signifying notable advancements in adopting renewable energy solutions for public transportation.

The caretaker provincial minister emphasized that the shift to solar energy will not only apply to the Orange Line train but will also encompass the train stations.

This all-encompassing strategy aligns with Lahore’s dedication to embracing sustainable practices in the domain of public transportation.

In addition to the environmental advantages, the initiative is anticipated to generate significant cost savings. According to estimates provided by the overseeing provincial minister, the transition to solar energy is expected to result in annual savings of over Rs 3 billion.
