All educational boards in Punjab have made a significant decision to conduct matriculation exams in English for both science and arts streams, beginning in 2025. This strategic step is intended to improve students’ English skills and bring educational standards in line with global norms.

Under this new policy, the use of Urdu in question papers will be gradually eliminated, ensuring a uniform language medium for all subjects. Furthermore, starting in 2026, all optional subjects for FA exams will also be conducted in English, solidifying the move towards English-based education.

The formal approval of this forward-thinking policy is pending and anticipated to be granted during the forthcoming Punjab Boards Committee Chairmen (PBCC) meeting. This transformative initiative demonstrates a proactive stance by educational authorities to adjust to the changing educational environment and equip students with crucial language skills for academic and professional achievements.

Nevertheless, amidst these reforms, concerns have been raised by Rana Liaqat Ali, the General Secretary of the Punjab Teachers Union, regarding potential challenges arising from the language transition. Expressing apprehension, he highlighted the risk of elevated student failure rates due to language barriers and underscored the importance of offering sufficient training to teachers to adeptly navigate this transition phase.

While acknowledging the valid concerns raised, it is essential to recognize the long-term benefits of providing students with English proficiency, which is increasingly crucial in today’s interconnected world. By embracing this change, Punjab’s educational system aims to empower students with the necessary skills to excel in a globalized environment while ensuring academic excellence and competitiveness.
